DIGITAL SANDMAN STRIPES

DONE RIGHT

Right Art and Cut Lines – From Original Screen-printed Samples

Right 5mm Clear Vinyl Edge

Right Colours – Because we are fussy like that

Combine that with the most solid colour depth achievable in digital ink output, using a layering method including a white under base ink to mimic how the screenprints are done, and our Digital Prints are our Screenprint kits, twin brother, not quite identical, but you’re going to do a double take, or ten. Adding more bang for your buck, and toting our usual standards in supplying a quality product, our digital kits are printed onto a premium clear automotive grade conformable adhesive media, and those popping colours are locked in with a protective clear cast gloss overlaminate, you’ll be able to check your teeth in.

For the Daily Drive, Adventurer, or Drive in Night

THE PROS & CONS

If your head’s spinning at all the options out there, here is a breakdown. Even if you don’t go for our stripes, we’ll arm you with the knowledge to find the best stripes for your van or ute.

Our Digital Prints

Pros

  • Always in stock.
  • Printed onto clear media like the screenprints.
  • Colour matched to new old stock original samples.
  • Artwork and cutlines traced and re-created from genuine originals.
  • Profile Cut to leave the correct 5mm clear border from the outer colour, with correct rounded off edges as per originals to negate decal peel back.
  • Layered digital print method including a white ink under base.
  • Colour depth and brightness typically not achievable in typical sign shop digital printing.
  • Colour control standards across print runs.
  • Custom colour options for once off prints for those who want something unique.
  • Long lifespan due to the following: UV stable digital inks. Clear digital media used suited for automotive application by in our minds the leading manufacturer, Avery Dennison, including a gloss cast overlaminate to lock in inks.

Cons

  • While there is zero pixelation or lines as commonly seen in standard digital prints, viewing at 30cm from our stripe, you can notice the tiny tells these are a digital print in some combos, due to the way digital printers deposit ink from nozzles onto the media.
  • Not the factory-original print method.

Our Screenprints

Pros

  • Printed using the original screenprint method of thick layers of ink from the 70’s.
  • Colour matched correctly to new old stock original samples.
  • Artwork and cutlines traced and re-created from genuine originals.
  • Profile cut to leave the correct 5mm clear border from the outer colour, with correct rounded off edges as per originals to negate decal peel back.
  • Media specifically made and imported from the US to suit the dying art of screen-printing for automotive application by in our minds the leading manufacturer of media, Avery Dennison.
  • Colour control standards across print runs
  • Finished with a clear protective ink overflow coat.
  • Longest lifespan on the market.
  • These are the stripes we have on our own multi award winning Concours HX Sandman.

Cons

  • Only print stock once a year. While stock is typically on the shelf year round, it is worth checking with us, as certain combos sell out faster than others, and less popular combos, we print smaller yearly quantities.
  • They are the most expensive option on the market.
  • Only available in factory colours (due to set up and print costs).

Our Single Colour Media Profile Cut Sandman Stripes

Pros

  • A cheaper option.
  • Artwork and cutlines traced and re-created from genuine originals.
  • Automotive grade media used to ensure longevity.
  • Great for custom stripe looks.
  • Standard black option supplied as an easy to apply air release media.

 Cons

  • Not a replacement for the original three colour look.
  • All vinyl cut sections are cut to a point or edge. Issue can be creating sharp edges and corners of the side stripe points and cornering of the SANDMAN lettering, which can result in peeling up or scuffing of those edges from washing, cleaning, the elements etc.

Other Sandman Stripes on the Market

The following info is gathered from viewing stripes on vans and utes over the years at various car events, Australian Van Nationals and vanning state titles, cruises, museums, and customer feedback, including new customers coming to us for replacement parts after a part respray or panel repair where their other digital stripes never match the new old stock factory colours of ours. We have no knowledge of who has printed what on any of these vehicles, this is just our observations of what we’ve seen in the flesh of the various other products on the market.

Other Digital Sandman Stripes

Pros

  • Some can be slightly cheaper.

Cons

  • All other digital kits we’ve seen are printed onto a white media and cut directly to the outer colour. Issue can be creating sharp edges and corners of the side stripe points and cornering of the SANDMAN lettering, which can result in peeling up or scuffing of those edges.
  • Most kits we’ve seen are not correct tracings of the original sandman side stripes or logos.
  • Incorrect colours compared to originals.
  • Ink depth, brightness and colour solidness, we’ve found is less compared to what we have achieved.

Multi-Vinyl Colour Layered Sandman Stripes

(Each colour is cut individually, and stuck on top of one another during fitment)

Pros

  • May be a cheaper option depending on grade of vinyl used. To cut a multi-layer kit using cast grade-coloured vinyls works out costly.
  • Coloured vinyl ensures solid vibrant colour.

Cons

  • If cheap vinyl is used to keep price down, longevity will be at risk.
  • Impossible to match vinyl colours to original colours.
  • All vinyl cut sections are cut to a point or edge. Issue can be creating sharp edges and corners of the side stripe points and cornering of the SANDMAN lettering, which can result in peeling up or scuffing of those edges.
  • Kits we’ve seen are not correct tracings of the original sandman side stripes or logos.
